Structural design challenges of Sydney Football Stadium

Join us as we review a case study on how to incorporate architectural vision within the realities of design constraints and project timelines

The design of the Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) presented many structural engineering challenges as the designers worked to incorporate both the architectural vision and a structure that could be designed and built in a compressed program. Structural engineering challenges included:

Sensitivity of the foundations,
The superstructure permanent movement joint philosophy
Designing for the interaction between the roof and the superstructure
Dynamic Analysis of the bowl
Using a digital workflow in the roof design
The structural analysis and design team needed to consider many engineering complexities to ensure that the best value for money structure could be delivered. The team’s innovation when looking at the most time consuming and costly components of the stadium included developing digital tools to achieve the ambitious design and construct time frame.
