Overcoming challenges of occupant fire evacuations from childcare centres

Understanding occupant evacuation is a major aspect of the day-to-day work of fire safety engineers.
A key component of the evacuation framework is the application of appropriate pre-movement times. The first presentation will provide an overview of the current understandings of pre-movement times, how it is being applied within the regulatory framework and present a case study in its application.
The understandings of pre-movement times will be presented by Gary Burns who is a qualified fire safety engineer and has been practicing within the fire safety industry for approximately 4 years.
Gary previously worked within the emergency services sector as a fire and rescue trainer, specialising in mine-site emergency response and has a diploma in crowd science and risk analysis.
Evacuation from childcare centres, presents unique challenges for fire safety engineers due to the nature and vulnerability of the occupants. The second presentation will provide an overview of the current understanding in evacuation from childcare centres, legislative requirements and also present a case study on a childcare located in a multi-storey building.

About the speakers
Senior Fire Safety Engineer, Arup
Pauric McCaughey has been practicing within the fire safety industry for approximately 7 years, most recently as a Senior Fire Safety Engineer for Arup, and has worked on a range of buildings in both the public and private sector. Pauric is a qualified fire safety engineer and has bachelor’s degree in engineering and science with a master’s degree in fire safety engineering. Pauric has previously worked as a fire safety engineer for the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
Senior Fire Safety Engineer, Xero Fire and Risk
Gary Burns has been practicing within the fire safety industry for approximately 4 years, most recently as a Senior Fire Safety Engineer for Xero Fire and Risk, working on projects in both the public and private sector on a range of building types. Gary is a qualified Fire Safety Engineer and has a level 5 diploma in Crowd Science and Risk Analysis. He has a Certificate III in Firefighting and Emergency Operations and a Certificate III in Mine Emergency Response and Rescue. Gary has previously worked within the emergency services sector as a fire and rescue trainer, specialising in mine-site emergency response and fire safety. Gary has also had an extensive mining career as an explosive shot-firer and also a mining engineer.
