Queensland's newest heritage - Mount Crosby Pumping Station Complex

Co-hosted by Water Panel Queensland and Co-hosted by Engineering Heritage Qld, ICE Qld Branch & AWA this event will give attendees the opportunity to learn more about this fascinating heritage as part of Brisbane's water supply story, the important individuals who have contributed to our understanding of the place, and how we are protecting water supply heritage into the future.

In late October 2019, the Queensland Heritage Council reached a decision to enter the Mount Crosby Pumping Station Complex in the Queensland Heritage Register as a place of state-level significance.

The Queensland Heritage Register is a list of places that have cultural heritage significance to Queensland. Places listed on the register are considered important as they contribute to our understanding of Queensland's history and heritage.

The Mount Crosby Pumping Station Complex extends across both the east and west banks of the Brisbane River and is evidence of historic water management at the landscape level since the 1800s.

Speakers

Brian Hester

Water Quality Specialist

Seqwater (In-person)

Brian Hester is one of Seqwater’s Water Quality Specialists and spent his youth (and adult life so far) closely associated with Mt Crosby, having grown up in the company township linked to the East Bank and West Bank WTPs. He is an industrial chemist who has had analytical and operational roles in both the public and private sectors, including the fields of conventional water treatment, desalination, wastewater and advanced water treatment.

He was fortunate enough to have been involved with the Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme during its construction, commissioning and validation; and also the Gold Coast Desalination Plant. Having a keen interest in the history of the water industry in South East Queensland and being personally involved in a wide array of natural and built water industry assets, has contributed to a thorough understanding of how they are intertwined.

Ironically in his current role with Seqwater, Brian regularly finds himself back at Mt Crosby involved in water quality and planning matters associated with a lot of the infrastructure that fascinated him as a youth and continues to do so.
